Age group: Year 7 and above.
Duration: 4 sessions per group run over five-day period. Each day there are 2 sessions.
Group size: The children are taken out in groups of 4 (maximum) by two nationally accredited cycle instructors. Each group will do 2 two-hour sessions. We run two groups per day, therefore 12 children per course.
Course: Bikeability Level 1, 2 and 3.
Location: Level 1 training is playground-based. Level 2 training is on quiet local roads, Level 3 on busier roads, and all are risk assessed by an instructor prior to use.
Initially, Level 1 is covered with all 12 trainees. Then we work in groups of 4 looking at Level 2, which allows the children to interact with real traffic, but sticking to quiet roads. By completing Level 2 children show they have the skills to make a trip safely on quiet roads and cycle lanes, perhaps to school. Level 3 looks at more advanced road positioning, how to use junctions with traffic lights, roundabouts and multi-lane roads.
Session 1: Level 1 training is completed/reaffirmed.
Session 2: Level 2 on road training commences.
Session 3: Level 2 training is completed and Level 3 training commences on roads and junctions trainees are likely to use on their way to school.
Session 4: Level 3 training is completed, looking at preparing for cycle journeys and advanced road positioning.
Post session: Feedback and Bikeability awards distributed.
